Syensqo And Vartega Collaborate To Advance Circularity Of Carbon-Fiber Composites

The partnership aims to transform dry carbon fiber and prepreg waste from Syensqo’s North American sites into Vartega’s EasyFeed bundles.

Syensqo and Vartega have announced a technical and commercial collaboration to create an ecosystem to foster the use of post-industrial recycled carbon-fiber products in high-performance applications.

According to the companies, their partnership aims to transform dry carbon fiber and prepreg waste from Syensqo’s North American sites into Vartega’s EasyFeed bundles. This collaboration will utilize Vartega’s recycling process to create sustainable carbon-fiber solutions.

Vartega’s EasyFeed bundle technology provides a high bulk density solution that enables seamless integration into existing thermoplastic compounding lines. The chopped carbon-fiber bundles are designed for enhanced flowability, making them an ideal solution for standard loss-in-weight feeders.

The companies said the recycled material will be incorporated into Syensqo’s Echo portfolio of carbon-fiber-reinforced specialty polymers, which are widely recognized for their applications in high-performance automotive components. These include structural parts, dampening rings, and transmission-related products.

Combining recycling with superior performance

By promoting circularity in carbon-fiber usage, the companies said the partnership highlights the potential of combining recycling with superior performance. It also underscores Syensqo’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, demonstrating how advanced materials can play a key role in building a more sustainable future.

Syensqo officials said they are pleased to partner with Vartega to ensure that the company’s carbon-fiber waste finds a new life within its own portfolio of products.

“This collaboration aims at enhancing our group’s product offerings while aligning with our One Planet commitment to transition to a circular economy,” the company said.

Andrew Maxey, CEO of Vartega, noted that his company exists to help its customers solve advanced materials recycling challenges.

“Syensqo’s leadership in sustainable composites is demonstrated through its efforts to incorporate renewable feedstocks and reduce composite waste as evidenced through this collaboration,” Maxey said. “Vartega makes this possible by giving composite waste a second life while enabling a significant reduction to the product’s carbon footprint. We are pleased to collaborate with Syensqo to advance this closed loop model.”
